Going to University

Full and part time student's with a disability are eligible to apply for a grant to help cover the costs associated with that disabilty. The word disability is used to refer to all disabilities including specific learning needs and language processing difficulties such as dyslexia.
The DSA is part of the Mandatory Award (grant) which is paid to students who are enrolled on certain courses at University. At present they are non-means tested and are designed to cover the extra costs you will incur on your course, because you have a disability. depending on your needs, extra support from the DSA could include:
  • General Disabled Students Allowance
  • Non-Medical Helpers' Allwance
  • Specialist Equipment Allowance
  • Extra Travel Costs as a Result of your Disability

What do you need to do?

If you are a student with a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, you will need a report that refers to both your Higher Educational requirements and your need for specific equipment or non-medical helper. At Buckden Consultants we can provide the evidence you will need.

If you have a disability that can be identified by a doctor, you will need to get the evidence from them.

You can apply for DSA any time before or during your course at University. You will need to provide evidence of your disability. If you are entering higher education for the first time and are applying to your funding authority for financial support, you should indicate on the application form (PN1) that you have a disability and wish to apply for DSA. If you are unsure about this process you should contact your Local Educational Authority.
